I paint everyday scenes based on candid photographs of people in the city. My aim is to present and defamiliarize the overlooked, imbuing the everyday with a sense of beauty and grandeur. The main thread in my work is the understated, fleeting moments in life that are often overlooked due to their familiarity.
Within this, my paintings point towards the ongoing conveyer belt of consumerism: mannequins, supermarket shelves, vending machines and fast-food outlets. I am interested in signifiers for the way we live today. Through framing, editing and the slow act of painting, the surreal natures of these vignettes of modern life are heightened, emphasising the extraordinary in the ordinary.
