CANE GRINDING

The hardest work of the men who work in the countryside of Colombia is the grinding of sugar cane in the traditional and archaic mills of the countryside in Colombia (called Trapiches). The men who work there do so 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on a 3/2 schedule, they work 3 hours and rest 2 in a row. They do it for a few extra bucks, an average of 20 dollars per 24 hours, and they give them food that consists of meat and cassava. They work at high temperatures where the sugarcane juice boils; on some occasions, men due to fatigue have fallen into these pans where they suffer a very painful death. After that they return to their homes for a week to work their crops and visit their family because the following week they will be back at another mill.
