When was the last time your own face surprised you? When your body did something new or looked a way in which it never had before? This tiny interruption in self-perception is where everything in the series emerges. In my series Blowjobs, I create a manual filter (a tremendous gust of air) and explore the surprising effects that emerge from this action - which is about setting up the conditions for a surprise encounter of my sitters with their own flesh. Sometimes it is deeply emotive; a scream of liberation, joy or anger, the scream into the void. Nearly always they are carnivalesque; recalling historical practices of disfigured or non-human masks dawned during times of celebration. Then, perhaps not unlike here, it is about turning the world upside for a bit, a designated time to imagine not who we are but who we could be.
