Rooted in feminist practice, and in the Filipino tradition of handicraft, these glasses serve as energetic beacons of sensuality and empowerment. The delicate shape of these glasses are inspired by the female form. It is in direct response to the censoring and injustice of women that is occurring in the current political climate in the Philippines, the artist’s country of origin. It is a reaction in particular to the president saying that female rebels should be shot in the vagina on national news. I wanted to create something empowering, and something functional that responded to how women are viewed in my country. I created these pieces to function within an installation, but also to be able to be used in everyday life. Each edition is named after an artist or feminist hero that inspired me to speak up.
