‘Axis Mundi 2020’ is a personal mandala which maps out key themes and events of 2020 and explores the ‘Hero’s Journey’ narrative arc as a framework. Through many cultures, mandalas have long been used as a tool for self-expression, spiritual transformation and as a pathway towards self-knowledge & personal growth. Mythologist Joseph Campbell states In The Power of Myth (1988): “In working out a mandala, you draw a circle and then think of the different impulse and value systems in your life…Making a mandala is a discipline for pulling all those scattered aspects of your life together, finding a centre." For me, the process of creating this mandala was both cathartic and meditative; an inward hero’s journey towards discovering the treasures of my own 'centre', and finding stillness and peace in a chaotic year.
