I did the first drawing in this series (the golf one) during a residency on Galiano Island in 2022. A year later, I continued working on more of these pastel drawings, this time at residencies in Italy and Spain, where the colour palettes around me brought something new compared to the Pacific Northwest I had been capturing before. Overall, these drawings attempt to capture moments in my memories. Specifically, the senses associated with those memories. How hot was it that day when the grass turned brown? What did the ocean smell like first thing in the morning? The sound of ping pong balls. Many of these memories are from the summertime—the time of year that slips by faster than any of the others. The pastels are smudgy, the colours are muddy, just like those memories.
