With players being traded for millions of euros and seats for hundreds, artist Charlie Spencer explores the sport’s glorification.
Using tinted resin mouldings, he removes the player to make way for the jersey, saturated with logos. The jersey becomes a work of art and carries the associated symbolism. In many respects, art resembles football: unreachable careers, extravagant valuations, glorification of the artists over the works.
The sculptures melt into the wall, as if the jersey were coming out of it. This transcendence is inspired by the transgression of social class boundaries, but also physical ones. This sculpture is a capture of the precise moment when time stops, when everyone holds their breath in front of the screen.
