I try to approach my paintings in an entirely open way, allowing my imagination and intuition to lead me. An image, shape, colour, memory or feeling may spark the initial idea and from there I allow intuitive mark making to take over. I like to believe that my paintings are my interior life made manifest and shine a light on my subconscious through the act of painting. The female figure represented in my work always appears, sometimes with children and sometimes not, and for me they are on some kind of journey or pilgrimage, literally or psychologically. Vibrant colours are dominant in my work, despite my best attempts to create a more muted palate! My goal is to create works of pure expression in an attempt to make manifest the lived experience of my own womanhood, which in everyday life remains obscured.
