Tillandsias, commonly called air plants, is an expansive group of plants that possess the unique ability to live unattached to any surfaces. They obtain essential nutrients and water through their specially adapted leaves. These leaves are also incredibly sculptural, posses eye-catching colors, and textures.
With the Air Plant Abstracts, I explore the spatial relationships of leaf forms by selecting or omitting different parts of the plant and emphasize the biology of the plants by placing them on white backgrounds. I was inspired by contemporary and historical botanical illustrations seen in botanical gardens and wanted to deviate a little bit from tradition by abstracting the plant's forms.
