These murals are from my Activism series (acrylic paint on plywood), honoring the legacy of Black artists and freedom fighters. My community in Mill Valley, California is in the midst of a reckoning with a long history of “liberal” racism. These public works reflect what a truly inclusive community could look like and how far we have to go in our work towards racial justice. My experience working with pastels significantly influences how I approach the painting and mark-making process. I found inspiration in working on a large scale and structured the works as portraits, creating an intimate connection between the subject and viewer. These two choices allows the work to take up significant space, both physically and emotionally. Ultimately, each mural invites the community to gather and engage in introspection and dialogue.
