Over the past two years, Aleksandar Bašić has created a series of strange and uncanny portraits of famous artists. He has done this by merging traditional portraiture with the kitsch of the selfie and chilling reality of facial recognition. The project is ambitious; it will total 99 pieces on completion. Many of the works are made with ink, acrylic and watercolour on paper, resulting in vivid colours and a strong graphic feel. Some of the more recent pieces are made with oil on canvas, adding a new depth and dimension to the work. Early portraits from the series were exhibited at 5th Base Gallery in April 2017. A year later, April 2018 and a combination of new works on paper and larger canvases will be unveiled for group exhibition 3.1.
