Booooooom x Capture Photography Festival: Public Art Open Call

We are excited to announce the continuation of our partnership with Capture Photography Festival, Western Canada’s largest lens-based art festival! Last year we curated, On Time, the Featured Exhibition for the festival, as well as two public art installations. This year we will be curating a public art installation which will be mounted at the Olympic Village Canada Line Station in Vancouver. This is an international open call for photographers and artists making lens-based work.

The selected artist will be part of the 12th annual 2025 Capture Photography Festival which will take place from April 1–30, 2025. The public art project will be on display from April–August 2025. The selected artist’s work will be featured in the 2025 Capture Catalogue and on the Capture and Booooooom websites. The artist will be paid a fee of approximately $750 CAD (the finalized artist fee will adhere to standard 2025 CARFAC fees for temporary public artworks in Canada).

Deadline for submissions: Monday, October 21, 2024 at 11:59 PM PST.

Last year, we selected Gabriel Esteban Molina as the artist for our 2024 Capture Public Art Project. You can read our interview with him here and see his work installed on the Lansdowne Canada Line Station.

For the 2025 installation, the artwork will be installed on the glass façade of the Olympic Village Canada Line Station that faces W 2nd Ave at Cambie St. Up to five works will be printed on 60/40 opacity vinyl and will be installed within the surface area of the five glass columns. A didactic panel with information on the work will be placed alongside the installation. The five columns can be used to display one large horizontal image across all the panels or a series of five images. The successful artist will work with Booooooom and Capture to finalize the installation mock-up.

You may submit a single work or a related series of works. If you want to submit multiple works that are not related to each other, please make multiple submissions, as multiple images in one entry will be considered as a single body of work, and the jury will take into consideration cohesiveness.

Please note we cannot publicly display images of people. As per InTransitBC Public Art Installation Policy: any depiction of graffiti, weapons, smoking, alcohol and drug paraphernalia, religious messages, corporate logos, or of individuals or groups within an artwork is not permitted

Unlimited entries are FREE for Booooooom members and Capture members. If you’re a Capture member, email Capture to request the submission link. All entries by non-members are subject to a fee of $15 USD paid at the time of submission.

All entries will be reviewed by Jeff Hamada, Editor-in-Chief of Booooooom, to identify a shortlist. This list will be reviewed by a jury of Capture Photography Festival and Boooooooom staff who will mutually agree upon a finalist. The chosen artist or artist group will be selected in November.

Deadline for submissions: Monday, October 21, 2024 at 11:59 PM PST.

All applicants will receive a notification after the final selection in November.
