A selection of work by artist Evelyn Tan. Originally from Vancouver, and currently based in Los Angeles, Tan holds a BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her work considers the deviations of identity in womanhood, pulling from dreams, memories, and fables across various diasporas. She works with a variety of materials including graphite, ink, paint, digital rendering, wood, and plexiglass. While Tan is an only child, she identifies fragmented ‘sister selves’ within herself, and explores these avatars alongside a compounding world of characters and symbols. The resulting tableaux are at once whimsical and grotesque. Meticulous displays of ironic and narrative scenarios where different character traits are posited in an endless tail-chase for sovereignty.
