A selection of work by illustrator Mabel Esteban. Born and based in Burgos, a small city in northern Spain, Esteban studied fine art and has a master’s degree in ceramics. Some of her influences include artists Frida Kahlo and Louise Bourgeois, traditional Japanese prints and modern Asian advertisements, as well as “all the information I consume on social media like Instagram or Pinterest.” Esteban’s broad interests and disciplines has helped her to develop a wider point of view:
“I mainly draw faces and heads, sometimes bodies, hair and vegetable items. I feel very comfortable with objects or inanimate things but I also love to adapt my illustrations to different requests. Somehow, I like to talk about the mysterious, about what is hidden. When I work for myself the illustrations usually have a sinister aura but it turns up naturally, I don’t do it on purpose. When I was younger I used to draw more specific creepy pics, now my work have become softer and this mystery is not so obvious and dark although it still very latent. I really feel comfortable with this characteristic and I think it is possibly what will make you love my illustrations or hate them.”
