A selection of paintings by German artist Jakob Scheidt. Born in Schwäbisch Gmünd, and currently based in Hamburg, Scheidt depicts complex scenes that thrive on the juxtaposition of extremes. Forms appear darkly condensed and knotted together, emerging from tangled background structures and coming to the foreground through the use of light tones. His artistic process involves both deconstruction and reconstruction with the remnants of certain motifs serving the formation of new inventions. Drawing on diverse art-historical and literary references, Scheidt attempts to address contemporary issues of collective guilt and responsibility. A wide variety of sources serve as source material including memories and photo fragments from news reports or archives. The result is a series of suggestive scenes that resist clear categorization and cannot be reduced to a single narrative.
