Artist Spotlight: Mark Stebbins

A selection of work by artist Mark Stebbins. Based in London, Ontario, Mark Stebbins creates acrylic paintings that explore links between digital imaging, craft history, artistic labour, and memory. Using a mixture of brushwork and pen-and-ink techniques, Stebbins applies tiny marks of acrylic paint in layers to create the illusion of textiles, brush strokes and pixellation. He draws inspiration from diverse visual histories from painting and textile traditions (particularly those specific to the area of Southwestern he is from) as well as contemporary digital imaging and AI image rendering.

“I think of my painting process as a form of conceptual layering in which I combine and rearrange various references, attempting to find crossovers between various art and craft histories. I’m interested in art as a form of storytelling labour and I want my works to register as a human rather than mechanical product. Compositions that feel odd and slightly unstable intrigue me, and I frequently aim for forms that blend and merge, resist simple interpretation and defy first impressions.”
