A selection of recent work by Japanese-Irish artist Shane Keisuke Berkery. Berkery is a contemporary figurative painter represented by the Molesworth gallery. He graduated from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin in 2015 and is currently pursuing his MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art. Berkery’s artistic process is deeply connected with memory and recollection. Commencing with photography, which marks a moment in life, Berkery revisits past events during the image selection process, calling forth new details, ideas and connections:
“I paint to remember. While my recollection for events often fails me, it never does when it comes to recalling things I have painted…. Through painting I want to explore the mental space from which memories, true or false, appear out of and disappear into. Where unsolicited thoughts, dreams, and the strange sensations of nostalgia and déjà vu emerge. In my creative process, I envision the paintings guiding me, dictating what should appear next on canvas. The resulting images aspire to be authentic and sincere, to resonate first with the eyes and then reverberate through the viewer’s own internal world.”
