A selection of drawings by Vancouver-based artist Katie So (previously featured here). So began the first drawing in the series during a residency on Galiano Island in 2022. She continued adding more pastel drawings at residencies in Italy and Spain, which offered new colour palettes compared to the Pacific Northwest she had captured before:
“Overall, these drawings attempt to capture moments in my memories. Specifically, the senses associated with those memories. How hot was it that day when the grass turned brown? What did the ocean smell like first thing in the morning? The sound of ping pong balls. Many of these memories are from the summertime — the time of year that slips by faster than any of the others. The pastels are smudgy, the colours are muddy, just like those memories.”
