Artist Spotlight: Manshen Lo

A selection of work by London-based artist Manshen Lo (previously featured here). Inspired by cinematography and comics, Lo’s approach is both realistic and minimalist. Her subjects often appear within contemporary urban settings that hint toward a subtle narrative element or tension. Known for her clarity of line and composition, Lo has worked on everything from book covers, title sequences, film posters and branding projects for a wide variety of clients including The New Yorker, Vogue, The Atlantic, Sony, Netflix, and Ikea. When it comes to her art, Lo is drawn to creating characters that would usually go unnoticed while at the same time romanticizing or idealizing that very sense of mundanity:

“I try to convey atmosphere or mood that is locked into the moment. I think it’s definitely to do with the culture where I grew up in China, and also the visual memory of when I was a kid and how humans were portrayed. People would be smiling with their teeth out in such a vigorous way, which for the young me was quite repulsive. I am decidedly going away from that path, so I want to draw people that are more drawn inwardly.”
