Based in Detroit and Miami, artist Hernan Bas is known for creating rich narrative scenes featuring a wide-range of references, from pop culture, art, and literature to kitsch and the occult. His latest show, “The Conceptualists: Vol. II,” marked his sixth exhibition with Lehmann Maupin which saw a continuation of the Conceptualists series Bas started in 2021. Throughout his works, Bas can be seen using humour to defamiliarize everyday experiences and reveal the surreal aspects lurking beneath the surface. The series combines Bas’s appreciation for conceptual artists with his interest in eccentricity. While Bas has previously depicted “enthusiasts” with esoteric habits, in this new body of work absurdity and obsession are rendered foundational to artistic practice.
