A selection of images by photographer Brendan George Ko (previously featured here). Based between Toronto and Maui, Ko has put together another virtual scrapbook, capturing the essence of the past year. As a visual storyteller that works in photography, video, installation, text, and sound, Ko’s work is about documentation:
“The scrapbook series is inspired by the person you got me into my profession, my mother. Growing up my sisters and I would have to pose, often with the blaring sun in our eyes for my mother and her Nikon FM. She thoroughly documented my childhood and it would be years later as an adult that I realized the value of her labor. On the shelves of our Wailuku residence are 20 scrapbooks filled with her photos, illustrations, field notes, and scraps and it was upon returning to them that I was able to relive my childhood. I got to revisit the red hills of Gallup, the white sands of Florida, theme parks and crusty cheap motel rooms. With Moonless Night, I am continuing that legacy in its ninth volume as I travel the world with friends and family, from Spain to the Boreal forests of Northern Saskatchewan to Hawai’i and Portugal, on assignment or on vacation, in hopes one day in the future we can all look back and revisit our past and remember a self that once was.”
