A selection of paintings depicting familiar, quotidian spaces by UK-based artist Ryan C. Brown. From public parks and suburban gardens to alleyways and residential streets, Brown creates scenes of “muted urban stillness” where flowers, animals and partially obscured people create momentary disruptions:
“The places in my paintings are pieced together from drawings and photographs and also memories and impressions of spaces I have encountered in the past. These composites are simplified, smoothed out to foreground the solitude of the subjects existing inside them. Instead of painting physical environments in all their specificity, I am interested in portraying instances of subjective present-ness in these environments, exploring them as sites of nostalgia, daydream, and introspection.”
