A series of images taken during the European heat wave of 2022 by Canadian photographer and designer Ariana Zukowski. Exploring the contrast between connection and isolation in the urban environment, Zukowski’s abstract street photography and minimalist landscapes convey emotion and broader themes through her use of colour, shadow, geometric surfaces and fragments of the human form. In “Heat Wave,” Zukowski captures a variety of attempts to grapple with record-breaking heat and what such events bring to mind in terms of our own fragility:
“Wrestling with this process involves our personal and communal anxieties, the realities thrust upon us via the environmental crisis and our collective future prospects. Visually, the use of beige and blue throughout the series speaks to the motifs of intense heat and the precarity of life-sustaining water.”
