Artist Spotlight: Sablo Mikawa

Originally from Saitama Prefecture, Japan, artist Sablo Mikawa learned oil painting in elementary school. Influenced by early-modernist paintings, he is known for his unique style depicting elements of contemporary life (including virtual reality like cinema and manga) in dramatic ways. The faces and bodies of his figures are rendered with grotesque effects, emphasizing character, interiority and disproportionate silhouettes. Inspired by historical European paintings, movies, music, and comics, Mikawa samples these effects to express the objects and emotions of the modern world.
