Artist Spotlight: Laura Burke

With an approach that she describes as slow and steady, Brooklyn-based artist Laura Burke (previously featured here) begins each drawing and painting with a doorway onto the page or canvas, and a world evolves around it. Pulling popular motifs from art history, her paintings often begin with objects such as flowers, vases, and fruit. “My intention with the work is to make a world that’s simultaneously familiar and fantastical,” she explains. “I use canonical objects to stay in the language of still life, while calling on memory and imagination to shift the picture toward something more personal. Each piece leads the viewer to a scene, and asks them to create their own narrative.” Likening her practice to childhood trips to the desolate beaches of the Oregon coast, Burke strives to create a beautiful experience for the viewer that can’t be touched or fully understood.
