A selection of images from a serendipitous collaboration between Swedish artist Mårten Lange and American artist Daniel Everett. In 2016, while looking through Everett’s book, Throughout the Universe in Perpetuity (Études, 2015), Lange stumbled across an image of City Tower in Shinjuku, Tokyo that looked almost identical to one he had taken years before. The two photos not only feature the same subject but the same crop and were shot from the same spot. As a result, Lange and Everett began discussing the coincidence before eventually making several trips to Tokyo and creating a body of work examining their points of convergence.

“Both artists operate from a place of observation, with architecture and likewise manufactured landscapes as their chosen visual conceit, using the idea of a metropolis as a vehicle to explore their individual preoccupations of what makes a civilization.”

While Everett and Lange each photograph the city according to their own personal modes of operation, they share the common goal of documenting the perspective of an outsider to Japanese culture and its customs. Remaining in conversation with one another, the two combine their efforts to offer a unique picture of Tokyo and its visual eccentricities.
