A selection of recent paintings by Bordeaux, France-based artist Matthieu Pommier (a.k.a Matth Velvet). With an educational background in design, Velvet started painting murals in the early 2000s. Simultaneously dreamlike and ordinary, the vibrant, colorful world that he paints centers around architecture and manufactured objects, “because they materialize our activities and our aspirations.” The people in his paintings are numerous, and often observed from a distance. “They are the extras of the context that sees them evolve,” he explains. “They are fleeting, carefree, and volatile presences in synthetic spaces, imbued with artificiality.” Velvet intentionally creates open-ended narratives, leaving interpretation up to the viewer.
