A selection of images by Vancouver-based photographer and artist Denis Gutiérrez-Ogrinc. Gutiérrez-Ogrinc has been working predominantly in street photography for the past five years. “Long Distance” is a series of images taken along the coasts and mountains of Sicily. While Gutiérrez-Ogrinc was experiencing the region for the first time, and the images include the type of tourist sites visitors are initially introduced, the photos are informed by the history of image-making that emerged out of postwar Italy.
“The artist Luigi Ghirri once remarked that Italy is a place where the photographer is truly put to the test, as they must find a way to work ‘between the highest Renaissance refinements and neorealist stereotypes.'”
Working primarily in public space, Gutiérrez-Ogrinc’s approach to photographing a place is shaped by his interest in individual stories, personal artifacts, and the unexpected or quiet moments of life. See more images from “Long Distance” below or on display at 1220 East Pender Street during Vancouver’s Eastside Culture Crawl which takes place November 17–18 (from 5 pm to 10 pm) and November 19–20 (from 11 am to 6 pm).
