Born in Paris, artist Zoé Numan moved around France a few times, before relocating to Maastricht, the Netherlands, to study philosophy. She found her way to painting on her own, outside of her academic studies, and has kept it up ever since. Although she mainly works with oil paints, Numan enjoys experimenting with different media, according to the atmosphere she is trying to create.
“I am generally drawn to moments or situations that carry a certain mystery, or wonder,” she explains. “My figurative approach to painting comes from my interest in how the real becomes fantasy, as it happens in a daydream. What I am looking for is the exploration of complex emotions and feelings, as a sort of quest within all the communication that happens in silence.”
