A selection of recent work by Brooklyn-based Chinese painter Xiao Wang (previously featured here). Combining dramatic, moody color palettes with a realist approach, Wang’s figurative paintings draw visual and conceptual inspiration from Romanticism, the Symbolist Movement, and Magical Realism. Through examining visual arts that reflect rapid social and cultural historical change, he explores the contemporary psyche, particularly around topics such as politics, Chinese/Asian identity, and environmental crises. Wang holds a BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Glasgow School of Art in Scotland, and an MFA in Painting from San Francisco Art Institute.
