Ongoing since 2007, “Experimental Relationship,” by Pixy Liao—a multidisciplinary Chinese artist based in New York—is a series of humorous self-portraits made with her boyfriend-turned-muse, Moro. “As a woman brought up in China, I used to think I could only love someone who is older and more mature than me, who can be my protector and mentor,” she explains. Everything changed when she met Moro—”I became the person who has more authority and power.”
“Experimental Relationship” considers these dynamics, flipping the script of traditional gender roles in heterosexual relationships, and exploring the range of relational possibilities. The project has grown with their relationship over the years, though Liao is clear that it is “never meant to be documentation.”
Images from “Experimental Relationship” are currently on display at Fotografiska as part of Liao’s first solo show, “Your Gaze Belongs to Me”.
