“Brooklyn Misremembered” by Mike Ryczek

A series of paintings by Massachusetts-based artist Mike Ryczek. Inspired by photos taken at a friend’s apartment in Flatbush in 2015, “Brooklyn Misremembered” is an attempt to capture his impressions of small areas and slight decorative touches of the inhabitant. While typical of a stark and aged apartment interior, Ryczek’s meditations are ultimately warped by his own experiences and the very act of storing them to memory:

“Nostalgia has always fascinated me and these paintings loosely deal with not only with the bittersweet nature of the emotion itself, but the question of why we feel it and why some tend to sentimentalize the past more than others.”

Each week our members share their work with us and we highlight the best of these submissions as Editors’ Picks. If you have work to share, you can learn more about becoming a member.
