A wonderful series inspired by a 200-year-old Japanese card game by New York City-based photographer Will Matsuda . Hanafuda involves collecting sets from a deck of 48 beautiful floral cards, roughly related to the months of the calendar year. While some of Matsuda’s photos look nothing like the traditional cards, that’s not the point. As he explains:
“I made these photos in Woodstock, New York, 5,000 miles from where my family lives in Honolulu. I am performing my Japanese-ness for the camera, for myself, and ultimately for you as the viewer, as a way to connect with home, even when I am very far away.”
